The Purpose and Future of Philanthropy in Brazil

With the economy showing significantly negative projections, the number of people and companies interested in making donations is growing considerably.

Historical events such as wars, epidemics, natural disasters, or human tragedies demand immediate actions and consequently generate reflections and collective commotion. To date, no milestone, however sad and devastating, has been able to directly and simultaneously affect aspects: social, economic and environmental (the three main pillars of sustainability) on a global scale.

This year of 2020 has opened many doors to uncertainty. At the same time, it encouraged and accelerated philanthropic practices, mainly in Brazil. The country is still behind in the ranking of major donors, but the pandemic has mobilized record values.

With the economy showing significantly negative projections, the number of people and companies interested in making donations is growing considerably. The first semester of this year is a milestone for Brazilian philanthropy – R $ 5.77 billion was collected by June 2020, according to data from the “stock monitor”.

The reflection that remains is: IS PHILANTHROPY IN THE COUNTRY BEING APPLIED AS A LONG-TERM ACT GENERATING OPPORTUNITIES AND CONSCIOUSNESS OR A SHORT TERM FOR THE NEED FOR SURVIVAL?

Philanthropy has to be present in everything becoming a habit for companies, regardless of crises or fatalities. The direct relationship between the concept of philanthropy and that of assistance must be broken in order for society to evolve in a sustainable manner. In view of this, for NTICS Projects, philanthropy represents CONSCIOUSNESS and CONSISTENCY being necessary not only for the environment and social development, but also for the economic. From the moment it becomes an act of survival or charity, the concepts of PURPOSE and LEGACY are lost.

The greatest act of philanthropy is investing in education, creating real opportunities for growth and development. The “making a difference” goes far beyond specific and monetary donations, it represents a 360 look and a true commitment to a purpose and transformation. This awareness begins with an investment and return to the community, expanding outside the organization and directly impacting organic, transparent and sustainable growth.

“We don’t have any more time, we can’t leave anyone behind. There were many revolutions, creations and innovations in these last centuries, but now we are facing perhaps our greatest challenge: how to transform our habits? How can we reframe our attitudes? How can we understand that our beliefs need to be guided by a greater good? Willing to answer all these questions, our projects bring a new look and make people reflect on being part of planet Earth. Earth is our home. It is inspiring to feel the changes happen, to watch realities change routes and all this thanks to EDUCATION and ACCESS TO KNOWLEDGE. It is what drives us to achieve ever greater results for the organization, for our partners, for the environment. Clients and companies directed their efforts towards Social Responsibility Projects and understood that they were jointly responsible for the changes in the communities around them. This is social responsibility, it is respect, it is a socio-environmental concern and above all: the purest essence of Philanthropy. ” – Ana Carolina Xavier, Executive Director NTICS Projects.

Every two years, the Group of Institutes, Foundations and Companies (GIFE), an association of Brazilian social investors with more than 150 members, conducts a survey with its affiliates to provide an overview of the amounts and destinations of donations made in the country. GIFE companies, institutes and foundations, family and independent, that allocate private money to social projects participate. In 2018 the donated amounts were R $ 3.25 billion.

According to GIFE, donations in the country are mainly intended for education. When asked about the destinations of interest, 80% of the responses went to the area followed by programs for generating work and income and the area of culture and leisure. In 2019 health was the tenth most mentioned area.

The legacy that NTICS delivers is directly linked to philanthropy, since all of our projects have educational, social and environmental development purposes and are aligned with the 17 sustainable development goals of the United Nations (UN). The projects are approved by Tax Incentive Laws and can also be financed through direct marketing funds.

We also have a commitment to the Amazon to support the Community of Punã annually through the Amazonas Sustainable Foundation (FAS). FAS adopts strategies on a global, Amazonian and national scale, implementing agendas related to the areas of health, education and citizenship, empowerment, income generation, community infrastructure, environmental conservation, management and transparency, research, development and innovation. All related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

It follows that philanthropy must be applied with long-term thinking, not just through occasional donations or through survival. Companies have to make a commitment thinking about actually solving problems, which goes beyond a monetary donation. HOW DO YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE? Investing in education and a greater purpose, delivering knowledge and more than that: OPPORTUNITIES. Do you want to be part of the history of Brazilian philanthropy by actually delivering results that are priceless? Talk to us and understand more about the concept and how to embrace the cause!
