OUR PLANET: REGENERATION STEP BY STEP.

Still on the series "Our Planet" produced by Netflix, let's discuss a little about the planet's regeneration and how we can help in this process.

One planet. Home to thousands of animal and plant species. From polar bears in the Arctic to penguins in Antarctica. From the desert elephants in Africa to the macarenia that sprouts in South America to the blue butterflies in Europe. They are all interconnected. Mangroves, for example, are nurseries for marine life, guaranteeing species that feed fish, that feed the human species, birds and other mammals. Threatening the mangrove is thus threatening our very survival.

The same is true of corals, which are so necessary and very threatened. Between 2016 and 2017 over a thousand Kms of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef bleached and died from rising ocean temperatures. On the other side of the Earth Globe, in Greenland, the extent of the immense ice shelf diminishes every summer. In the extreme south, Antarctica has been frozen for 30 million years. The ice cap in the center is more than 4 km thick, but it is shrinking visibly.

Recovering the planet, then, depends on all of us, on every little action, as the documentary series ‘Our Planet’ from the Netflix streaming service reveals. Half of the world’s coral reefs are dead. The remaining  could disappear in the next few decades.

To avoid it, it is necessary to transform 1/3 of marine environments into protected areas. It is necessary to reduce water pollution and dispose of plastic waste correctly. In this way, fishing areas can recover and help sustain humanity and other species.

Coming from the beaches to the land, the rainforests look the same, but each one is unique and unique. And the biggest one is, in part, in Brazil. The Amazon basin is more than 3,000 km long and is half of the planet’s remaining rainforests. So beautiful, so exuberant, essential and in danger of disappearing. Forest diversity is falling at an alarming rate. In recent years, humanity has replaced 27 million hectares of native forest with a single species. Monocultures drive many animals to extinction. To regenerate it is to ensure our own survival, since forests regulate rainfall patterns, pollination, produce medical assets that have not yet been discovered.

Nature is resilient. The greatest proof of its ability to regenerate is observable where major disasters occurred, such as Chernobyl in 1986.  One of the 4 nuclear reactors exploded. More than 100,000 people evacuated, never returned to their homes. The area was considered uninhabitable for 20 thousand years.

Even with radiation the vegetation regrowth. Animals started to return. It is irrefutable proof that if we decide to give the forests time and space, they will be able to overlay the earth with rich and diverse fauna and flora that our generation has recently destroyed.

To help protect these ecosystems, one way is to buy food from certified producers and traders, who are committed to sustainability and to maintain native species and riparian forests, which manage water. In the case of companies, it is essential  to acquire raw materials from a certified source, use water and energy responsibly, control the emission of polluting gases and the correct disposal of waste.

What we buy, eat, produce, discard will determine the future of the planet. Have you thought about how you can do your part?
